Amapola (Pretty Little Poppy) was first published in 1924 and was a #1 hit in 1941 for the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra with vocals by Helen O’Connell and Bob Eberly. Also recorded by Tito Schipa in the 1920s, Jan Peerce in the 1950s, then by Andrea Bocelli and Paul Potts.
This cover is from the version Deanna Durbin sang in the film “First Love” – recorded February 28, 1940 – written by Joseph LaCalle and Albert Gamse.
This is a quite special cover, an intimate reinterpretation with a solo piano, which destructure the temporal development of the phrases on many points, and presents an expressive dynamic, opposite to what we normally find in commercial music.
