One-man music machine, Marq Electronica delivers sad electro-pop atmospheres, releasing the dark synth-led funky single ‘In A City (Love)’.

After debuting with the single ‘Get Down and Work It Out’, the artist Marq Electronica, based in the north-east of the UK, continues to broaden the horizons of his solo project.

Having organized music events and performed for over a decade, including treading the Pride on Tyne second stage a few years ago, and more recently having organized the Musicians Against Homelessness gigs, Marq has finally mustered the confidence to release his long-awaited solo material.

“After years singing and writing lyrics and performing in the region with my band, lockdown gave me the opportunity to work on solo material and some exciting collaborations.” So Marq explains how, thanks also to the support of his bandmates and other local artists, he decided to dive headlong into his first solo project. “I’ve never been that confident writing my own music and lyrics but after sharing some of my songs with friends and fellow musicians they encouraged me to share it with everyone and strike out as a solo artist.”

After the pure funk anthem ‘Get Down and Work It Out’, Marq’s second release is the single ‘In A City (Love)’. Here his influences from R&B and electronic artists are strong and evident, from Missy Elliott to Daft Punk, from Fever Ray to Goldfrapp, to other fantastic groups that have left their mark, such as Massive Attack.

But the funky journey that Marq started with ‘Get Down and Work It Out’, with ‘In A City (Love)’ takes a further twist, one as intriguing as it is fascinating. A granular and organic mix of dark pop, woven on a weave of sparkling electro filaments, with ‘In A City (Love)’ Marq lets the funk that beats in his heart be released in all its vibrancy.

A clear retro touch, for a synth-led kind of electronic music that sees the marriage between traditional instruments and other ones with a more “hi-tech genome”, which effectively builds an engaging, permeating atmosphere. Almost impressionistic, if you like.

While Marq plans to build his catalogue for his solo project, with more releases on the way, he’s also working on future pieces with Simon Ellis, Brit and Ivor Novello Award-winning producer.

So, stay tuned and watch this space for more upcoming gems.
