Cedar Sparks // Maggie - single cover
Read & Listen

Based on tragic true-life events circa 1833, the song is written in the first-person perspective of Charles Getter, a delusional psychopath who believes he’s acting out of love.

Sometimes the best surprises come from where you least expect them.

At first glance, the collaboration between Carbone and Rogai might seem unlikely, as Carbone and Rogai have spent their careers in different fields and come from two connotatively different worlds of music.

Carbone is one of the founding members of the bluegrass/jam band Railroad Earth, which, like most of the acts on this circuit, stands out in live performances and improvisations.

Rogai is a recording artist whose main musical production comes from the Lewis & Clarke hat, in the form of “long-lasting artistic folk,” as L&C describes it on its website. On the one hand, the fever of the fleeting moment. On the other hand, the wisely weighted chisel.

Two figures can’t stay on the same card face, you could say. But when they joined under the moniker of Cedar Sparks, that card became a special, with two aces, one on each face.

The love for local history and storytelling did the rest, giving space to the artistic sensitivity and creative musicality of a creative unicum that we want to adjective as “Jasonic.”

Jason, a Mythical Greek hero, son of Aeson and Polyphemus, could guess the past and the future, which is why he had two faces. The correlation we are looking for here is more subtle than the physical one. His ability as a soothsayer prevailed over the very fabric of time.

Similarly, Cedar Sparks’ sensitivity deinterlaces the very fabric of time. That of “Maggie” is a story temporally distant from us, from our society, and from our experience. Yet it is something that may have happened directly to any of your friends or acquaintances.

In their artistic inspiration, Cedar Spark makes this story so vibrant, touching, and vivid that it involves us to the point of being able to identify with the narrator.

The only caveat we could make to this remarkable duo is that they’ve spent too much time since their debut – which came in 2018 with “Gathering Song” – before returning with a new job.

But luckily, we don’t have to wait long to find out how the story goes on, as they have announced that “Blood in The River,” the sequel to “Maggie,” will be out on November 20th.

And of course, it goes without saying that we are eagerly waiting to listen to it.
